“Chris, how about affirmations? Do they work?”

Good question! And one that often comes up in workshops.

Here’s my take on affirmations.

I do use them and believe in their potential. But, there’s a few things to consider: First, make sure that you don’t reactivate or amplify the energy of LACK of something. What do I mean by that? If you affirm, “I am confident” (for example), because you’re not feeling confident and think using an affirmation will change that, you might unknowingly be amplifying your lack of confidence because your positive affirmation is, in fact, founded on lack.

Similarly, with well over 90% of our lives being run by our unconscious/subconscious minds, simply affirming ideas with the conscious mind alone is not guaranteed to be effective. If you say, “I am confident,” but your subconscious mind goes, “yeah right,” because that’s your negative programme running based on stored past experiences, you want to activate the positive programme of the subconscious mind also, by adding PROOF of why you’re confident. This way, your subconscious mind will (re)activate those neural pathways, agree with your conscious mind more easily, thus making the affirmation far more effective. And the more you do that, the more you can habituate ALL of your mind to be more confident/positive/whatever your affirmation is.

So, for example, I am confident” becomes: “I am confident BECAUSE I have been successful before.” Or, “I am confident BECAUSE I am qualified” etc.
